Verbs agree with their subjects in number.<\/h4><div class='special-heading-border'><div class='special-heading-inner-border' ><\/div><\/div><\/div><br \/>\nA singular subject requires a singular verb.<br \/>\n<em>Lois <strong>fills<\/strong> up her gas tank whenever it\u2019s low.<\/em><br \/>\nA plural subject requires a plural verb.<br \/>\n<em>Lois and Marie <strong>fill<\/strong> up her gas tank whenever it\u2019s low.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>They <strong>were<\/strong> going to fill up the tank, but they forgot.<\/em><br \/>\nVerbs may not always follow directly after the subject.<br \/>\n<em>The puppies in the cages at the mall <strong>looked<\/strong> so adorable.<\/em><br \/>\n<div  style='padding-bottom:10px; ' class='av-special-heading av-special-heading-h4  blockquote modern-quote  avia-builder-el-2  el_after_av_heading  el_before_av_heading  '><h4 class='av-special-heading-tag '  itemprop=\"headline\"  >3. Generally, collective nouns take singular verbs.<\/h4><div class='special-heading-border'><div class='special-heading-inner-border' ><\/div><\/div><\/div><br \/>\nCollective nouns are nouns that imply more than one person (such as a group, a team, a family, etc.). Even though they imply more than one person, the nouns themselves are singular and require singular verb forms.<br \/>\n<em>T<\/em><em>he board <strong>is<\/strong> reviewing the plans to revise the budget.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>The family <strong>was<\/strong> concerned over the recent tax hikes.<\/em><br \/>\nOccasionally collective nouns will take plural verbs when the collective noun is meant in the sense of many individuals and not the group as a whole.<br \/>\n<em>A number of people <strong>are<\/strong> interested in running for governor.<\/em><br \/>\n<div  style='padding-bottom:10px; ' class='av-special-heading av-special-heading-h4  blockquote modern-quote  avia-builder-el-3  el_after_av_heading  el_before_av_heading  '><h4 class='av-special-heading-tag '  itemprop=\"headline\"  >4.
