Your best preparation for Step 1 is to practice board-style <a title=\"USMLE Step 1 Practice Questions: 5 Tips\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kaptest.com\/blog\/prep\/usmle\/what-should-i-gather-from-usmle-step-1-practice-questions\/\">questions<\/a>. Start while you\u2019re studying in M1 and M2 with review books that have Step 1 style questions and then utilize resources to practice review questions daily during your study period.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><footer class=\"entry-footer\"><\/footer><\/article><div class='iconlist-timeline'><\/div><\/li>\n<li><div  class='iconlist_icon  avia-font-entypo-fontello'><span class='iconlist-char ' aria-hidden='true' data-av_icon='\ue84e' data-av_iconfont='entypo-fontello'><\/span><\/div><article class=\"article-icon-entry \"  itemscope=\"itemscope\" itemtype=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/BlogPosting\" itemprop=\"blogPost\" ><div class='iconlist_content_wrap'><header class=\"entry-content-header\"><h4 class='av_iconlist_title iconlist_title   '  itemprop=\"headline\"  >Read the Last Line First<\/h4><\/header><div class='iconlist_content  '  itemprop=\"text\"  ><p>Most of the time, the question stems on Step 1 are very long but sometimes, the question they ask doesn\u2019t rely on the information in the stem. For example, they may provide a long patient case only to ask \u201cWhat\u2019s the most common cause of hypertension?\u201d for which you don\u2019t need the patient information! This can be a time-saver.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><footer class=\"entry-footer\"><\/footer><\/article><div class='iconlist-timeline'><\/div><\/li>\n<li><div  class='iconlist_icon  avia-font-entypo-fontello'><span class='iconlist-char ' aria-hidden='true' data-av_icon='\ue814' data-av_iconfont='entypo-fontello'><\/span><\/div><article class=\"article-icon-entry \"  itemscope=\"itemscope\" itemtype=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/BlogPosting\" itemprop=\"blogPost\" ><div class='iconlist_content_wrap'><header class=\"entry-content-header\"><h4 class='av_iconlist_title iconlist_title   '  itemprop=\"headline\"  >Don\u2019t Look at the Answer Choices<\/h4><\/header><div class='iconlist_content  '  itemprop=\"text\"  ><p>Once you read the question, consider coming up with an answer in your head first and then find that answer among the given answer choices. This will help you go with your gut and keep you from choosing a \u201c<a title=\"USMLE Step 1 Strategy: How to Pick the Best Answers\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kaptest.com\/blog\/prep\/usmle\/usmle-step-1-how-to-pick-the-best-answers\/\">distractor<\/a>.\u201d Keep in mind that you may need to reformulate your answer to fit the answer choice. For example, you may be thinking \u201cVitamin C\u201d but the answer choice may read \u201cascorbic acid.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><footer class=\"entry-footer\"><\/footer><\/article><div class='iconlist-timeline'><\/div><\/li>\n<li><div  class='iconlist_icon  avia-font-entypo-fontello'><span class='iconlist-char ' aria-hidden='true' data-av_icon='\ue829' data-av_iconfont='entypo-fontello'><\/span><\/div><article class=\"article-icon-entry \"  itemscope=\"itemscope\" itemtype=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/BlogPosting\" itemprop=\"blogPost\" ><div class='iconlist_content_wrap'><header class=\"entry-content-header\"><h4 class='av_iconlist_title iconlist_title   '  itemprop=\"headline\"  >Use the Marking Tool<\/h4><\/header><div class='iconlist_content  '  itemprop=\"text\"  ><p>If you find yourself spending more than a couple of minutes on one question, consider making an educated guess and marking the question to go back to it if you have time at the end. Because questions aren\u2019t in order of difficulty, there may be easier questions at the end that you would have gotten had you not wasted time on a more difficult one earlier on in the block.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><footer class=\"entry-footer\"><\/footer><\/article><div class='iconlist-timeline'><\/div><\/li>\n<li><div  class='iconlist_icon  avia-font-entypo-fontello'><span class='iconlist-char ' aria-hidden='true' data-av_icon='\ue83f' data-av_iconfont='entypo-fontello'><\/span><\/div><article class=\"article-icon-entry \"  itemscope=\"itemscope\" itemtype=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/BlogPosting\" itemprop=\"blogPost\" ><div class='iconlist_content_wrap'><header class=\"entry-content-header\"><h4 class='av_iconlist_title iconlist_title   '  itemprop=\"headline\"  >Don\u2019t Change Your Answer<\/h4><\/header><div class='iconlist_content  '  itemprop=\"text\"  ><p>Once you\u2019ve thought through a question and selected an answer, avoid changing your answer. You will most likely change it to the wrong one! The exception? Perhaps you note when the time for a block is a couple of minutes short of half way and you check to be sure you\u2019re just over half the questions. Whatever your method, be sure to have one.
