You will have 2.5 hours for about 46 questions that require you to:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">answer questions based on single passages and on passages that are paired together (reading and thinking skills);<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">review written text and select words and phrases so that the final product is written correctly (language skills); and<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">compose an extended response to a writing prompt based on reading one or two passages or a passage accompanied by a graphic (writing skills).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first section of the test includes reading and language questions and concludes with about 45 minutes for the Extended Response. Seventy-five percent of the questions are based on <\/span><strong>informational texts<\/strong>, which include workplace- and community-based documents, <strong>general nonfiction<\/strong>, and <strong>nonfiction related to general interest social studies and science<\/strong> topics. Twenty-five percent of the questions are based on <strong>fiction<\/strong> selections.<br \/>\n<div  style='padding-bottom:10px; ' class='av-special-heading av-special-heading-h2    avia-builder-el-2  el_after_av_heading  el_before_av_heading  '><h2 class='av-special-heading-tag '  itemprop=\"headline\"  >GED Language Content Areas<\/h2><div class='special-heading-border'><div class='special-heading-inner-border' ><\/div><\/div><\/div><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The language skills model real-life editing to ensure correct <\/span><strong>sentence structure<\/strong>, <strong>agreement<\/strong> (subject-verb and pronoun-antecedent), <strong>capitalization<\/strong>, <strong>punctuation<\/strong>, <strong>homonyms<\/strong>, and <strong>possessives<\/strong>. The questions also assess appropriate <strong>word choice<\/strong> and <strong>elimination of informal usage<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to fit the purpose of the writing task.<\/span><br \/>\n<div  style='padding-bottom:10px; ' class='av-special-heading av-special-heading-h2    avia-builder-el-3  el_after_av_heading  el_before_av_heading  '><h2 class='av-special-heading-tag '  itemprop=\"headline\"  >GED Extended Response<\/h2><div class='special-heading-border'><div class='special-heading-inner-border' ><\/div><\/div><\/div><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Extended Response requires reading text materials and responding to a writing prompt (assignment) by <\/span><strong>developing an argument and supporting your ideas with evidence<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from the text.<\/span><br \/>\n<div  style='padding-bottom:10px; ' class='av-special-heading av-special-heading-h2    avia-builder-el-4  el_after_av_heading  el_before_av_iconlist  '><h2 class='av-special-heading-tag '  itemprop=\"headline\"  >Computer-Based Reasoning through Language Arts Test Question Formats<\/h2><div class='special-heading-border'><div class='special-heading-inner-border' ><\/div><\/div><\/div><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You will work with several different question formats on the RLA Test. This activity integrates reading and analytical skills with writing skills.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can take up to 45 minutes at the end of the first section of the RLA Test to complete the assignment. This task has its own clock to help you manage your time. Here are some time management suggestions:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em> Preview<\/em> the writing prompt.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em> Read<\/em> the selection or selections, carefully using the highlighter tool to draw attention to information for later use.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em> Compose<\/em> a thesis statement.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em> Gather evidence<\/em> from the text to support your thesis statement.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em> Plan<\/em> your response (use the offline wipe-off board).<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em> Draft<\/em> your response (in the text box that scrolls down).<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em> Review<\/em> your response to improve your writing and correct any errors with the editing tools\u2014cut, copy, paste, undo, and redo.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><div  style='padding-bottom:10px; ' class='av-special-heading av-special-heading-h3    avia-builder-el-7  el_after_av_heading  avia-builder-el-last  '><h3 class='av-special-heading-tag '  itemprop=\"headline\"  >Qualities of a Successful Extended Response on the GED<\/h3><div class='special-heading-border'><div class='special-heading-inner-border' ><\/div><\/div><\/div><br \/>\nYour response can earn up to 6 points. It is reviewed for three different \u201ctraits\u201d or qualities, and each trait is assigned a score from 0\u20132. So, <em>3 traits times a maximum of 2 points each equals a maximum of 6 points<\/em>.<br \/>\nUnlike other writing that you may have done in the past, this task is \u201cevidence-based writing,\u201d meaning that you need to base your position on the information and arguments in the reading materials.<br \/>\nTrait 1:<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Creation of Arguments and Use of Evidence<\/strong><br \/>\nTo earn a score of 2 on Trait 1 you need to do the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Create an argument by making a logical claim that clearly states your position.<\/li>\n<li>Use 3 or more specific references from the text(s) to support the claim.<\/li>\n<li>Identify valid arguments and\/or fallacious claims in the text(s).<\/li>\n<li>Point out supported and\/or unsupported claims in the text(s).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Trait 2:<strong>\u00a0Development of Ideas and Organizational Structure<\/strong><br \/>\nTo earn a score of 2 on Trait 2 you need to do the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Create an effective organizational structure.<\/li>\n<li>Sequence ideas logically so that one idea leads to the next.<\/li>\n<li>Elaborate main ideas and tie them to specific evidence from the text.<\/li>\n<li>Make effective transitions to cohesively link ideas.<\/li>\n<li>Use accurate and advanced word choice.<\/li>\n<li>Employ an appropriate level of formality (no slang, etc.).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Trait 3:<strong> Clarity and Command of Standard English Conventions<\/strong><br \/>\nTo earn a score of 2 on Trait 3, you need to have few errors that would interfere with a reader\u2019s understanding of what you wrote.
