  1. You\u2019ve been a leader and, more importantly, a follower<\/strong>. In law school, you will be trained\u00a0to lead<\/a>, but you will also be expected to\u00a0listen<\/a>.<\/li>\n
  2. You understand what it means to commit.\u00a0<\/strong>Enlisting in the military may have been your introduction to the legal world when you signed your enlistment contract. Unlike more traditional applicants whose experience may be limited to their undergraduate education, you have already made a\u00a0major life commitment\u2014of time and finances\u2014and this shows law schools that you\u2019re in it for the long haul.<\/li>\n
  3. Diversity!<\/strong>\u00a0The military is not a homogenous entity\u2014far from it<\/a>! In the military, you\u2019ve learned to work together with people from different cultures and backgrounds. Law schools are always looking to build\u00a0diverse cohort<\/a>s that will engage and challenge each other in the classroom. Not only are you used to working with different people; your military service also enhances the cohort.<\/li>\n
  4. Your experience isn\u2019t theoretical.<\/strong>\u00a0Most applicants to law school are\u00a0under the age of 24<\/a>\u00a0and fairly recent graduates. As such, their experience in the so-called \u201creal world\u201d is limited. Military experience, even without combat duty, is very real. Stakes and consequences are high, and your ability to successfully navigate your service is proof of competency in itself. Use that to your advantage.<\/li>\n

There could be an \u201cI\u201d in \u201cTeam.\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0In the military, you\u2019ve focused so much on the collective, that it can be a challenge to separate your personal achievements from your unit\u2019s. Find the contributions you\u2019ve personally made, and highlight them on your law school application. Remember that \u201cI\u201d is not a dirty word. Law schools want to learn about YOU. And remember that military experience IS work experience. Don\u2019t downplay it.<\/li>\n
    2. Get rid of the jargon!<\/strong>\u00a0Most law school admissions officers are civilians with little to no experience with military terms. There are many\u00a0resources<\/a>\u00a0available to help you \u201ctranslate\u201d your resume and experience into civilian terms.<\/li>\n
    3. Law school is school.<\/strong>\u00a0If there is a significant time gap between your undergraduate education and your application to law school, you will need to show that you are ready for the academic rigor of a legal education.\u00a0Letters of recommendation<\/a>\u00a0from academic sources are great, but you also need to\u00a0dominate the LSAT<\/a>\u00a0to demonstrate your critical thinking and reading skills.<\/li>\n
    4. Research, research, research.<\/strong>\u00a0You\u2019ll be doing a ton of research in law school, why not start now by looking into military-friendly law schools? Many law schools take steps toward making their application and\u00a0admission process<\/a>\u00a0military-friendly. From having a veteran read through applications, to having additional support in place for veteran students, to contributing to the\u00a0Yellow Ribbon<\/a>\u00a0program, there are many schools out there telling you they want you.<\/li>\n
    5. Make it personal.<\/strong>\u00a0Your\u00a0personal statement<\/a>\u00a0is your chance to highlight what you\u2019ve learned in the military and tie it back to your plans for law school. Don\u2019t shy away from your military experience; instead, tell a good story!<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
