After the all-important residency interviews, it\u2019s time to complete another key piece of the Match Day puzzle: your rank order list (ROL). The ROL is the list of all the\u00a0residency programs you\u2019re willing to attend,\u00a0and you\u2019ll want to take a strategic approach when you create your list. Be sure you\u2019re a good fit with the program\u2019s mission and culture and that the program is in an environment where you can thrive.
\nIt\u2019s also important to prioritize the programs on your list and submit a list that\u2019s long enough to make you more likely to match. You\u2019ll enter your ROL in the\u00a0Registration, Ranking, and Results (R3<\/a>\u00ae) system<\/a>, which is the web-based software application through which all National Resident Matching Program\u00ae\u00a0(NRMP\u00ae) Matches are managed. It performs a number of functions, including updating your personal information and searching for programs you want to rank.

What to consider when creating a rank order list<\/h3>

\nClearly, where you train will have a direct impact on the kind of medicine you\u2019ll practice in the future. While this is by no means an exhaustive list of questions to consider when making decisions about determining your rank order, here are a few things to ask when\u00a0assessing residency programs.<\/p>\n

  • What\u2019s the overall quality of the program?<\/li>\n
  • What are the\u00a0research opportunities?<\/li>\n
  • What\u2019s their track record with fellowship placement?<\/li>\n
  • How happy are the residents?<\/li>\n
  • Could I consider this my future place of employment?<\/li>\n
  • Am I willing to move to this location?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    It\u2019s a good idea to have your Match Day rank order list reviewed by a trusted dean or advisor. Having a second pair of eyes check your list will help make sure it\u2019s accurate, and it\u2019s always best to get a second opinion about whether you should shorten your list.
