Before test day arrives, you should have a clear plan for tackling the entire section and its specific question types. Apply the following strategies as you navigate the ELA portion of the exam.

1. Practice Active Reading: Don’t just skim! Engage with the passage. Use the highlighter tool to mark main ideas, and create a Roadmap by jotting down the topic of each paragraph as you read. Ask yourself questions like “What is the author trying to say here?” and “How does this detail support the main argument?”

2. Use Process of Elimination: If you can determine that one or more answer choices are definitely incorrect, you can increase your chances of getting the correct answer by paring the selection down. Use the elimination tool or mentally cross out any answer choices that you determine are incorrect. If only one answer choice is left, select it and move on. If more than one answer choice remains, remember that you must answer every question, so take your best guess. On questions that require more than one correct answer, eliminate choices until you have the required number of answers remaining.

3. Manage Your Time: Remember: The ELA section is timed! Practice reading quickly and accurately. Learn to manage your time effectively, allocating sufficient time for both reading and answering questions. Don’t spend too long on any single question. If you’re stuck, make an educated guess and move on.

SHSAT Practice Questions

Looking for more SHSAT practice?
