This doesn\u2019t mean that it is not important to approach the passage strategically\u2014it is. However, if you do not answer the questions correctly, the passage hasn\u2019t done you much good.<br \/>\nThere are four basic question types in the SHSAT Reading section: Global, Detail, Function, and Inference questions.<\/p>\n<p><div  style='padding-bottom:10px; ' class='av-special-heading av-special-heading-h4    avia-builder-el-0  el_before_av_iconlist  avia-builder-el-first  '><h4 class='av-special-heading-tag '  itemprop=\"headline\"  >Global Questions<\/h4><div class='special-heading-border'><div class='special-heading-inner-border' ><\/div><\/div><\/div><br \/>\nGlobal questions either ask you to choose a correct summary of the passage as a whole or to identify key information and ideas within the passage.<br \/>\nTo answer Global questions successfully:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Identify the central idea or theme of the passage<\/li>\n<li>Do not reread the entire passage<\/li>\n<li>Use your Roadmap as a brief summary<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Avoid these major wrong answer traps when answering Global questions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Out of Scope\u2014the answer includes information that is not in the passage<\/li>\n<li>Misused Detail\u2014the answer is a true statement from the passage, but it doesn\u2019t answer the question<\/li>\n<li>Extreme\u2014the answer takes a stronger position (often more positive or more negative) than the passage takes<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><div  class='avia-icon-list-container   avia-builder-el-1  el_after_av_heading  el_before_av_hr '><ul class='avia-icon-list avia-icon-list-left av-iconlist-big avia_animate_when_almost_visible avia-iconlist-animate'>\n<li><div  class='iconlist_icon  avia-font-entypo-fontello'><span class='iconlist-char ' aria-hidden='true' data-av_icon='\ue812' data-av_iconfont='entypo-fontello'><\/span><\/div><article class=\"article-icon-entry \"  itemscope=\"itemscope\" itemtype=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/BlogPosting\" itemprop=\"blogPost\" ><div class='iconlist_content_wrap'><header class=\"entry-content-header\"><h4 class='av_iconlist_title iconlist_title   '  itemprop=\"headline\"  >Summarizing Sentences<\/h4><\/header><div class='iconlist_content  '  itemprop=\"text\"  ><p>A key strategy for Global questions is to look for a choice that summarizes the entire passage\u2014not just a detail that\u2019s mentioned once or discussed in a single paragraph, but information that\u2019s present throughout the whole passage.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><footer class=\"entry-footer\"><\/footer><\/article><div class='iconlist-timeline'><\/div><\/li>\n<\/ul><\/div><br \/>\n<div  style='height:1px; margin-top:-50px'  class='hr hr-invisible   avia-builder-el-2  el_after_av_iconlist  el_before_av_heading '><span class='hr-inner ' ><span class='hr-inner-style'><\/span><\/span><\/div><br \/>\n<div  style='padding-bottom:10px; ' class='av-special-heading av-special-heading-h4    avia-builder-el-3  el_after_av_hr  el_before_av_heading  '><h4 class='av-special-heading-tag '  itemprop=\"headline\"  >Detail Questions<\/h4><div class='special-heading-border'><div class='special-heading-inner-border' ><\/div><\/div><\/div><br \/>\nDetail questions ask you to track down a piece of information directly stated in the passage, so you will not have to make any inferences as you answer these. Remember that you will not (and should not!) remember every detail from your reading of the passage. Your Roadmap can help you find the location of the detail in question; then, you should research the passage text to answer Detail questions.<br \/>\nYou can recognize Detail questions because they will often use wording like \u201cAccording to the passage\/ author,\u201d \u201cThe author states,\u201d or \u201cThe passage makes clear.\u201d These questions will almost never have phrases such as \u201cThe author suggests\u201d or \u201cThe author implies,\u201d which indicate an Inference question.<br \/>\nTo answer Detail questions successfully:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Use line references or specific phrasing in the question to find the relevant section of the passage<\/li>\n<li>Quickly skim through the relevant section to find specific evidence for your prediction; you should be able to put your finger on the exact information required to answer the question<\/li>\n<li>Rephrase the evidence in the passage in your own words to make a prediction and find a match among the answer choices<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Avoid these major wrong answer traps when answering Detail questions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Misused Detail\u2014the answer includes details that are directly from the passage but are unrelated to or do not answer the question<\/li>\n<li>Distortions\u2014the answer includes details from the passage that are altered to be partially incorrect<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><div  style='padding-bottom:10px; ' class='av-special-heading av-special-heading-h4    avia-builder-el-4  el_after_av_heading  el_before_av_heading  '><h4 class='av-special-heading-tag '  itemprop=\"headline\"  >Function Questions<\/h4><div class='special-heading-border'><div class='special-heading-inner-border' ><\/div><\/div><\/div><br \/>\nFunction questions ask about the purpose of a particular part of the passage. They can ask about the purpose of any of the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>a word<\/li>\n<li>a sentence<\/li>\n<li>a paragraph<\/li>\n<li>a detail<\/li>\n<li>a quote<\/li>\n<li>punctuation<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>To answer Function questions successfully:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Focus on the author\u2019s reason for including the cited feature<\/li>\n<li>Take note of any transition words, and read around the cited text to get context and an understanding of the author\u2019s reasoning<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Avoid these major wrong answer traps when answering Function questions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Distortions\u2014the answer includes details from the passage that are altered to be partially incorrect<\/li>\n<li>Out of Scope\u2014the answer includes information that is not in the passage<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><div  style='padding-bottom:10px; ' class='av-special-heading av-special-heading-h4    avia-builder-el-5  el_after_av_heading  avia-builder-el-last  '><h4 class='av-special-heading-tag '  itemprop=\"headline\"  >Inference Questions<\/h4><div class='special-heading-border'><div class='special-heading-inner-border' ><\/div><\/div><\/div><br \/>\nAn Inference question, like a Detail question, asks you to find relevant information in the passage. But once you\u2019ve located the details, you\u2019ve got to go one step further: to figure out the underlying point of a particular phrase or example.<br \/>\nTo answer Inference questions successfully:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Look for clues that show how the author connects relevant details within the passage<\/li>\n<li>Consider how the author\u2019s point of view limits the range of what could be true<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Avoid these major wrong answer traps when answering Inference questions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Out of Scope\u2014the answer includes information that is not in the passage<\/li>\n<li>Extreme\u2014the answer is too extreme to reflect the author\u2019s purpose<\/li>\n<li>Misused Detail\u2014the answer is a true statement from the passage, but it doesn\u2019t answer the question<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Reading points on the SHSAT\u00a0Reading section come from answering the questions, not simply reading the passages.
