For those of us with disabilities, physical impairments, or other health-related challenges, it can be even more daunting. <a title=\"gre accommodations\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ets.org\/gre\/revised_general\/register\/disabilities?WT.ac=rx28\">ETS<\/a>, the GRE\u2019s official test-maker, offers GRE accommodations for test-takers with additional needs. This means you can qualify for extra time, braille versions of the test, ergonomic keyboards, and other modifications. It\u2019s important to know 1) if you qualify for accommodations, 2) what your accommodation will be, and 3) how to submit a request\u00a0for GRE accommodations.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In an effort to ensure the equality of the GRE, ETS is committed to assisting those who qualify as described under the ADA Amendments Act of 2008. Applications are evaluated on a case-by-case basis.<\/span><br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n<div  style='padding-bottom:10px; ' class='av-special-heading av-special-heading-h3    avia-builder-el-0  el_before_av_heading  avia-builder-el-first  '><h3 class='av-special-heading-tag '  itemprop=\"headline\"  >1. Do I qualify for GRE accommodations?<\/h3><div class='special-heading-border'><div class='special-heading-inner-border' ><\/div><\/div><\/div><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some reasons for GRE accommodation are more common than others. The most cited reasons for accommodations, <a title=\"gre accommodations\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ets.org\/s\/gre\/pdf\/bulletin_supplement_test_takers_with_disabilities_health_needs_18_19.pdf\">according to the ETS<\/a>, include:<\/span><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ets.org\/disabilities\/documentation\/documenting_adhd\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ADHD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: persistent patterns of inattention and\/or hyperactivity that interferes with normal functions.<\/span><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ets.org\/disabilities\/documentation\/documenting_asd\/#introduction\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Autism Spectrum Disorder<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by features of social\/communication deficits, repetitive\/restrictive behaviors, and a lack of emotional reciprocity.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ets.org\/disabilities\/documentation\/documenting_vision_loss\/\">Blindness\/Low Vision:<\/a>\u00a0v<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">isual acuity that is less than 20\/200, or severe visual impairment that is partially improved, but not fully resolved, by corrective lenses.<\/span><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ets.org\/disabilities\/documentation\/documenting_hearing_loss\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Deaf\/Hard of Hearing<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: permanent hearing loss.<\/span><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ets.org\/disabilities\/documentation\/documenting_intellectual_disabilities\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Intellectual Disabilities<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: a disorder with onset during the developmental period that includes both intellectual and adaptive functioning deficits in conceptual, social, and practical domains.<\/span><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ets.org\/disabilities\/documentation\/documenting_learning_disabilities\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Learning Disabilities<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: significant difficulties in acquisition and use of listening, speaking, reading, writing, reasoning, or mathematical abilities.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ets.org\/disabilities\/documentation\/documenting_physical_disabilities\/\">Physical Disabilities\/Chronic Health Conditions:<\/a>\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a variety of impairments including cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis, arthritis, Crohn\u2019s disease, asthma, and immune disorders, among others. Must substantially limit one or more major life activities.<\/span><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ets.org\/disabilities\/documentation\/documenting_psychiatric_disabilities\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Psychiatric Disabilities<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: characterized by different degrees of emotional, developmental, cognitive, and\/or behavioral manifestations (i.e. obsessive-compulsive, bipolar, generalized anxiety, mood, and post-traumatic stress disorders). <\/span><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ets.org\/disabilities\/documentation\/documenting_traumatic_brain_injury\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Traumatic Brain Injury<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: disruption of normal brain function as a result of exposure to external physical force.<\/span><br \/>\n<div  style='padding-bottom:10px; ' class='av-special-heading av-special-heading-h3    avia-builder-el-1  el_after_av_heading  el_before_av_heading  '><h3 class='av-special-heading-tag '  itemprop=\"headline\"  >2. What will my accommodations be?<\/h3><div class='special-heading-border'><div class='special-heading-inner-border' ><\/div><\/div><\/div><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The ETS has created a description of <a title=\"gre accommodations\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ets.org\/disabilities\/test_takers\/accommodations\/\">common testing accommodations<\/a>. Here are some of the\u00a0options available to test-takers with a need for accommodations.<\/span><br \/>\n<b>Extended Time:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Test takers can receive up to a 50% time increases, or \u201ctime and a half.\u201d If a test lasts for 3 hours, a 50% increase results in an additional 1.5 hours, or 4.5 hours total. Occasionally a test-taker\u00a0will qualify for a 100% increase, or double time.<\/span><br \/>\n<b>Extra Breaks: <\/b>A<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">llows students to take unscheduled breaks. This could include time for snacks, rest, medicine, etc.<\/span><br \/>\n<b>Reader or Scribe: <\/b>A<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0designated Reader can read the test print aloud. A Scribe can write\/bubble a student\u2019s answers.<\/span><br \/>\n<b>Oral Interpreters: <\/b>Oral Interpreters\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">communicate verbal directions to deaf students through sign language.<\/span><br \/>\n<b>Braille Slate\/Perkins Brailler: <\/b>A<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">llows visually impaired students assistance for note taking.<\/span><br \/>\n<div  style='padding-bottom:10px; ' class='av-special-heading av-special-heading-h3    avia-builder-el-2  el_after_av_heading  el_before_av_sidebar  '><h3 class='av-special-heading-tag '  itemprop=\"headline\"  >3. How do I submit a GRE accommodation request? <\/h3><div class='special-heading-border'><div class='special-heading-inner-border' ><\/div><\/div><\/div><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you qualify for a GRE accommodation, you&#8217;ll need to show proper documentation. This type of documentation much match <a title=\"ged accommodation\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ets.org\/disabilities\/documentation\/\">criteria set forth by the ETS<\/a>, including current evaluations, medical history, a signed document printed on a letterhead, etc.\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Each individual\u00a0case is different, so it\u2019s important to request accommodations early. The <a title=\"gre accommodations\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ets.org\/disabilities\/test_takers\/request_accommodations\/\">ETS states<\/a> that it can take up to <\/span>6 weeks<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for accommodations to be processed properly.\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The documents can be <a title=\"gre accommodations\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ets.org\/disabilities\/test_takers\/request_accommodations\/\">submitted<\/a> through both\u00a0mail and\u00a0email<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In the case of\u00a0some accommodations, a member of ETS Disability Services will get in contact with you to schedule your exam.\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<b>If your request is approved, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a formal letter stating accommodation\u00a0approval will arrive from ETS.
