For those of use with disabilities, physical impairments, or health-related\u00a0challenges, it can be even more daunting. The ACT\u2019s official test-maker offers accommodations for students with extra\u00a0testing needs. This means you can qualify for extra time, braille versions of the test, ergonomic keyboards, and other test modifications. It\u2019s important to know 1) if you qualify for accommodations, 2) what your accommodations will be, and 3) how to submit a request to the ACT to qualify for ACT accommodations.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In an effort to ensure that every student has equal opportunity to take and do well on the ACT, the ACT is committed to assisting those who qualify as described under the <a title=\"act accommodations\" href=\"https:\/\/www.eeoc.gov\/laws\/statutes\/adaaa.cfm\">ADA Amendments Act of 2008<\/a>. Applications are evaluated on a case-by-case basis.<\/span><br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n<div  style='padding-bottom:10px; ' class='av-special-heading av-special-heading-h3    avia-builder-el-0  el_before_av_heading  avia-builder-el-first  '><h3 class='av-special-heading-tag '  itemprop=\"headline\"  >1. Do I qualify for ACT accommodations?<\/h3><div class='special-heading-border'><div class='special-heading-inner-border' ><\/div><\/div><\/div><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Some accommodations are more common than others. <a title=\"act accommodations\" href=\"http:\/\/www.act.org\/content\/dam\/act\/unsecured\/documents\/6368-ACT-Policy-for-Documentation-Web.pdf\">According to the ACT<\/a>, common\u00a0reasons for accommodations include:<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Learning Disabilities<\/strong>: significant difficulties in acquisition and use of listening, speaking, reading, writing, reasoning, or mathematical skills.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>ADHD<\/strong>: persistent patterns of inattention and\/or hyperactivity that interferes with functioning.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Psychiatric Disabilities<\/strong>: characterized by different degrees of emotional, developmental, cognitive, and\/or behavioral challenges\u00a0(i.e. obsessive-compulsive, bipolar, generalized anxiety, mood, and post-traumatic stress disorders). <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Autism Spectrum Disorder<\/strong>: a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by social\/communication deficits, repetitive\/restrictive behaviors, and a lack of emotional reciprocity.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Visual Impairment<\/strong>: visual acuity that is less than 20\/200, or severe visual impairment that is partially improved, but not fully resolved, by corrective lenses.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Hearing Impairment<\/strong>: permanent hearing loss.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Autism, Asperger\u2019s Disorder, Pervasive Development Disorder, or Autism Spectrum Disorder<\/strong>: a disorder with onset during the developmental period that includes both intellectual and adaptive functioning deficits in conceptual, social, and practical domains.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Physical Disabilities \/ Chronic Health\u00a0Conditions<\/strong>: a variety of impairments, including cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis, arthritis, Crohn\u2019s disease, asthma, and immune disorders, among others. Must substantially limit one or more major life activities.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Traumatic Brain Injury<\/strong>: disruption of normal brain function as a result of exposure to external physical force.<\/span><br \/>\nAccommodations are also available for English learners, whether or not they have a disability.<br \/>\n<div  style='padding-bottom:10px; ' class='av-special-heading av-special-heading-h3    avia-builder-el-1  el_after_av_heading  el_before_av_heading  '><h3 class='av-special-heading-tag '  itemprop=\"headline\"  >2. What will my accommodations be?<\/h3><div class='special-heading-border'><div class='special-heading-inner-border' ><\/div><\/div><\/div><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The ACT has two different categories of testing accommodations: <\/span><a title=\"act accommodations\" href=\"https:\/\/www.act.org\/content\/dam\/act\/unsecured\/documents\/Accommodations-National-Special.pdf\">National<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>Special<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. After you <a title=\"act accommodations\" href=\"https:\/\/www.act.org\/content\/act\/en.html\">sign up for the ACT<\/a>, you will need to opt for one of these categories.\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<b>National:\u00a0<\/b>National accommodations can be provided at testing centers. These include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Extended Time:<\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Test takers can receive up to a 50% time extension, or \u201ctime and a half.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li><em>Wheelchair accessible room<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Large type (18-point font) test booklet<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Approved dictionary<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Assistance marking responses<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Special seating to lip-read<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Sign-language interpreter (for spoken instructions only)<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Use of an approved word-to-word dictionary (for English learners)<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Special: <\/b>Special accommodations are for those with disabilities requiring\u00a0special assistance that cannot be provided at testing centers. These include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Extended time:<\/em>\u00a0More than a 50% extension, testing over multiple days, or extended time for the writing portion only.<\/li>\n<li><i>Scribe or computer for the\u00a0writing test<\/i><\/li>\n<li><em>Alternate test formats (braille, audio, or a reader)<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><div  style='padding-bottom:10px; ' class='av-special-heading av-special-heading-h3    avia-builder-el-2  el_after_av_heading  avia-builder-el-last  '><h3 class='av-special-heading-tag '  itemprop=\"headline\"  >3. How do I submit a request for ACT accommodations?<\/h3><div class='special-heading-border'><div class='special-heading-inner-border' ><\/div><\/div><\/div><br \/>\nYou&#8217;ll need to go through the <a title=\"act accommodations\" href=\"http:\/\/www.act.org\/content\/dam\/act\/unsecured\/documents\/Accommodations-Infographic-Student.pdf\">following three steps<\/a> in order to get accommodations approved through the ACT:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Register for the official ACT at <a title=\"act accommodations\" href=\"https:\/\/www.act.org\/content\/act\/en.html\">act.org<\/a>. Indicate that you need accommodations or English learner support, and specify which accommodation(s) you need. The ACT will send you an email with instructions once your test registration is complete.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Pull up the email sent from the ACT detailing your accommodation instructions. Fill out the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.act.org\/content\/dam\/act\/unsecured\/documents\/TAA-Consent-to-Release-Information-to-ACT.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Consent to Release Information<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> form, and forward both the form and email to your school official.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Your school official will submit your accommodation request to the ACT. The ACT will contact your school with its decision. Your school official will contact you within two weeks to let you know if you&#8217;ve qualified for accommodations. Your school can also provide you with\u00a0a copy of the\u00a0Decision Notification, an outline of the ACT&#8217;s decision about your accommodations.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><b>If your request is approved, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">you can proceed with your test registration and expect the approved accommodations to be provided\u00a0on test day.<\/span><br \/>\n<strong><b>If your request is not approved, <\/b><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">speak with your\u00a0school official for next steps. <\/span><br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>ACT test\u00a0day can be\u00a0stressful.
