How to Register for the USMLE® Step 1
The USMLE is a very challenging test, but registering for it shouldn’t be. Here is all that you need to know about registering for the USMLE and eligibility.
Eligibility Requirements for USMLE Step 1
To be eligible to take Step 1, you must be in one of the following categories at the time of application and on test day:
- A medical student officially enrolled in, or a graduate of, a U.S. or Canadian medical school program leading to the M.D. degree that is accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME)
- A medical student officially enrolled in, or a graduate of, a U.S. medical school program leading to the D.O. degree that is accredited by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA)
- A medical student officially enrolled in, or a graduate of, a medical school outside the United States and Canada and eligible for examination by the ECFMG for its certificate
Students and graduates of medical schools outside the U. S. and Canada may take Step 1, and Step 2 CK in any sequence.
Registration Process for USMLE Step 1
When applying for Step 1, you must select a three-month period during which you would like to take the test. A Scheduling Permit with instructions for making an appointment at a Prometric test center will be sent to you after your registration is processed. The Scheduling Permit specifies the three-month eligibility period during which you must complete the examination.
Step 1 is administered in the United States and Canada and in more than 50 other countries by Prometric. You can schedule test dates at www.prometric.com.

Registration Process for Students and graduates of LCME and AOA-accredited medical schools
Students and graduates of medical schools in the United States and Canada accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education or the American Osteopathic Association may register for the Step 1 through:
