Recently accepted students to Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta, Georgia, had a median GPA of 3.7 and a median MCAT score of 514. The fourth-year emergency medicine clerkship at Emory, medical students gain skills in refining history and physical assessment of the patient. Students form the ability to assess the clinical situation rapidly and they develop both treatment and evaluation plans thoroughly. The emergency medicine clerkship at Florida State University College of Medicine introduces students to the role that Emergency Medicine plays in the management of acute disease. The Emergency Department provides an opportunity for significant clinical exposure and learning of many skills. Students will also be taught to appreciate the dynamic state of emergency medicine knowledge, the necessity for maintaining currency, and the means to do it. In 2019, 8 Florida State seniors found their match in emergency medicine residencies. The Tallahassee, Florida institution boasts affordable in-state tuition rates, a smaller class size of 120, and an average GPA of 3.7 and average MCAT score of 506 for the 2019 entering class.

The Advanced Elective in Emergency Medicine at NYU is a “sub-internship” that exposes senior medical students to the diverse spectrum of clinical problems encountered in the Emergency Department. Students gain experience in the assessment and treatment of various acute medical and surgical disorders. They work closely with the senior residents and faculty of the Ronald O. Perelman Department of Emergency Medicine in the diagnosis and management of both critically and non-critically ill patients. In addition to the patient care responsibilities, there will be dedicated didactic lectures, simulation sessions, procedure and ultrasound workshops, and a weekly resident conference. NYU’s entering class of 101 students in 2019 has some of the strongest median GPAs and MCAT scores, especially considering that the school offers full-tuition scholarships to all current students and future matriculated students in the MD degree program, regardless of merit or financial need provided they maintain satisfactory academic progress. Oakland University Beaumont School of Medicine students take a four-week emergency medicine rotation in their fourth year. During the required clerkship, students become familiar with the initial evaluation and therapy of a broad variety of adult and pediatric emergencies. Students also develop or improve technical skills in wound care, lumbar puncture, central venous access, eye examination, suturing, splinting, and EKG interpretation. For the Class of 2023, the Southeastern Michigan school received more than 7,500 applications for only 125 seats. Those admitted had an overall GPA of 3.8 and a median MCAT score of 509. In 2019, 20 OUWB seniors matched into emergency medicine residencies.

The Renaissance School of Medicine at Stony Brook University, located in Stony Brook, New York, had an entering class of 136 students in 2018 with an average 3.80 GPA and an average overall MCAT score in the 90th percentile. The Department of Emergency Medicine offers electives in the third and fourth years of medical school, as well as a two-week clerkship in the third year. The faculty also teach Stony Brook medical students Advanced Cardiac Life Support during their third year of medical school. In 2018, 16 Stony Brook seniors matched into emergency medicine.

Foster School of Medicine students can join the Emergency Medicine Club, whose purpose is to promote and enhance the knowledge and understanding of current and future topics and procedures in emergency medicine via lecture, hands-on experience, open forum discussion, and newsletters. In 2019, nine of the Lubbock, Texas school’s seniors matched into emergency medicine residencies. The 2019 incoming class of 104 students in the West Texas medical school had an average GPA of 3.7 and an average MCAT score of 507.7.
The Emergency Medicine clerkship at Pritzker School of Medicine is a required month-long clerkship for fourth-year medical students and is consistently one of the highest-rated clerkships. Students complete the clinical portion of the clerkship at the University of Chicago Medical Center or North Shore University Hospital in Evanston. During the month on the Emergency Medicine clerkship, students are required to participate in several simulation and didactic sessions, with attending and fellow level instruction. Students rotate through a procedure lab where ultrasound-guided central lines, ultrasound-guided peripheral lines, lumbar punctures, intubations by direct laryngoscopy, and suturing are practiced. The MCAT score range for the 2019 entering class was 505 to 528, the cumulative GPA range was 3.27 to 4.0, and 36.7% of the class took at least two gap years before entering medical school. The University of Colorado School of Medicine offers an Emergency Care (EC) Clerkship, a 2-week required clerkship in emergency and urgent care. Students will learn about assessment and management of patients in an emergency department setting.​ Students are exposed to the pre-hospital and emergency medicine environment to allow them to better understand the challenges for patients and providers to provide outstanding clinical care to patients who are in need of acute medical care. The Class of 2022 of 184 at the University of Colorado School of Medicine had impressive stats, with an average GPA of 3.76 and an average MCAT score of 511. In 2019, 6 seniors from the University of Pennsylvania matched into emergency medicine. The Emergency medicine clerkship is a required clerkship at this Ivy. The 3-week core rotation provides a unique opportunity for students to evaluate and manage undifferentiated patients, actively participate in the resuscitation of acutely ill patients, and perform basic procedures. The Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania receives more than $800 million in annual sponsored research. The selective institution boasts median MCAT and GPA scores of 521 and 3.89 for its Class of 2023 and a class size of about 150 students.

Four Yale seniors matched into emergency medicine residencies in 2019. At Yale, the emergency medicine rotation is designed to expose the student to a wide variety of acute medical and surgical problems and to give students experience in the evaluation and treatment of these illnesses.
