Medical Schools for Urology

Urology is the study and treatment of diseases of the male and female genitourinary tract in both adult and pediatric patients. Urologists manage urologic diseases both medically and surgically. Urology is a highly competitive specialty. In 2018, 133 training programs were available to aspiring urologists, each of whom submitted 70 applications during the 2018 match. Each program received an average of 234 applications and granted on average just 36 interviews. While most medical schools will send only one senior into urology specialties, some schools tend to send, on average, many more. Here are some of the best medical schools for urology residency matches in 2019.

Baylor offers its medical students several opportunities for subinternships in urology, as well as a urology student interest group. In 2019, 2 Baylor seniors matched into a urology residency. The Houston, Texas medical school is made up of about 85% Texas residents, and underrepresented minority groups in medicine make up almost 18% percent of the Baylor medical students.

Boston University School of Medicine offers a full-time, one-month clerkship in the Urology Department for three students during each month. Students participate in all aspects of general urology and become proficient in the evaluation of a variety of urologic problems, including urologic neoplasms, neurogenic bladder, renal transplantation, reconstructive urologic surgery, urinary calculus disease and obstructive uropathy. BUMC saw 5 of its seniors match into coveted urology residencies in 2019. A highly competitive program, BUMC has 160 seats open every year.

Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons, or P&S for short, in New York City admitted 140 students to its MD class of 2022. The 2019 Match Day saw 2 Columbia seniors match into a urology residency. During the Major Clinical Year (MCY), Columbia P&S students participate in 1-week clerkships. The goal of the rotation is for students to gain an ability to recognize and diagnose common diseases of the genitourinary system through bedside teaching seminars and didactics in private practice and operating room settings.

The MD Urology Clerkship is an extension of clinical experience in urology that goes beyond the core clerkship level to include patient diagnosis and care. This program at IU School of Medicine provides a broad exposure to the surgical and medical management of urologic diseases and puts heavy emphasis on urologic cancer, laparoscopy and reconstruction. Medical students with an interest in urology may also choose to pursue Clinical Urology or Laparoscopic Urology electives. Urology residency placements were achieved by 5 IU seniors in 2018. Boasting one of the largest entering classes, with more than 350 seats, IU M1s had a median GPA of 3.75 and a median MCAT score of 510.

The Chicago-based medical school admits a class of 159, with a median GPA of 3.91 and a median MCAT score of 520. The Department of Urology at Northwestern Feinberg School of Medicine gives third and fourth-year students many opportunities to explore the field before choosing their residency path. M3 students may elect to spend four weeks during the eight-week surgery clerkship rotating in urology. The urology rotation introduces medical students to the basic concepts of urology, enabling them to evaluate patients with urologic diseases and interpret laboratory and radiological tests to evaluate urologic conditions. There are two additional urology electives for M4 students. Five Feinberg seniors matched into urology in 2018.

The Kidney-Urology Pathway at SUNY Downstate provides students an enriched experience in multiple aspects of nephrology and urology through their four-year medical school experience and is open to students interested in related topics including nephrology, urology, immunology, radiology and pathology. In 2019, 6 SUNY Downstate seniors chose to specialize in urology after graduation.

UCLA offers a two-week rotation in urology to third-year medical students. By the end of the rotation, you should be familiar with a variety of diagnostic techniques in the field of Urology such as cystoscopy, prostate biopsy, MRI and CT scans of the abdomen and pelvis, and renal, bladder and scrotal ultrasound. You will also have operative exposure to inpatient and outpatient urologic surgery. In 2019, 3 UCLA seniors matched into urology residencies across the country.

With median MCAT scores and GPA at 515 and 3.75, the rigorous training program at University of Cincinnati College of Medicine now attracts roughly half of its matriculants from outside of Ohio. Third-year elective rotations include the option to participate in the Urology Specialty Clerkship, where you will be actively involved in the evaluation and care of urologic patients. Students will also be exposed to and may participate in urologic surgery, both in the operating room and in the Cystoscopy Suite. Students also acquire a basic knowledge of urinary tract infection, stone disease, urologic oncology and impotence/infertility, and more. Two UC students matched into urology residency programs in 2019.

University of Michigan medical students interested in the field of urology have the opportunity to participate in a four-week Urology sub-internship. With options to learn in either adult or pediatric urology settings, medical students can learn about a wide range of urologic conditions and clinic life. Students also participate in lectures, Grand Rounds and self-directed study. Two Michigan seniors found their match in urology residencies in 2019. With median GPA at 3.78 and an MCAT score in the 90th percentile, Michigan is one of the most competitive med schools in the country.

Students at the College of Medicine at The University of Tennessee Health Science Center have opportunities for urology and pediatric urology clerkships during their studies. In 2018, 3 UTHSC seniors matched into urology. A median GPA of 3.72 and a median MCAT score of 510 is what you’ll need to aim for if you’re vying for one of UTHSC’s 170 seats.
